Carbon steel plate is one of the most basic categories of steel materials. It is based on iron, with a carbon content between 0.0218%-2.11% (industrial standard), and contains no or a small amount of alloying elements. According to the carbon content, it can be divided into:
Low carbon steel (C≤0.25%): good toughness, easy to process, Q235 belongs to this category;
Medium carbon steel (0.25%<C≤0.6%): high strength and hardness;
High carbon steel (C>0.6%): extremely high hardness and high brittleness.

Q235 carbon steel: definition and core parameters (GB/T 700-2006 standard)
Composition | C | Si | Mn | P | S |
Content | ≤0.22% | ≤0.35% | ≤1.4% | ≤0.045% | ≤0.045% |
Mechanical properties:
Yield strength: ≥235MPa (thickness ≤16mm)
Tensile strength: 375-500MPa
Elongation: ≥26% (thickness ≤16mm)
Material and Performance
Material: Common materials include GR.B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, etc.
Performance Characteristics
High Strength: Able to withstand the high pressure generated by fluids such as oil and natural gas during transportation.
High Toughness: It is not easy to break when subjected to external impact or geological changes, ensuring the safe operation of the pipeline.
Good Corrosion Resistance: According to different use environments and media, choosing appropriate materials and surface treatment methods can effectively resist corrosion and extend the service life of the pipeline.
Q235's "hexagonal warrior" Characteristics
Excellent Processing Performance
Weldability: No preheating required, suitable for arc welding, gas welding and other processes (such as building steel structure welding);
Cold Formability: Can be easily bent and stamped (example: distribution box shell, ventilation duct);
Machinability: Stable performance under low-speed cutting (machine parts processing).
Comprehensive Mechanical Balance
Strength vs Toughness: 235MPa yield strength takes into account both load-bearing and impact resistance (compared to Q195's 195MPa);
Surface Treatment Adaptability: Easy to galvanize and spray paint (such as guardrails, light steel keels).
Outstanding Economic Efficiency
The cost is about 15%-20% lower than that of low-alloy high-strength steel (such as Q345), suitable for large-scale application.
High Degree of Standardization
Common thickness: 3-50mm (sufficient stock, reducing customization cycle);
Implementation standards: GB/T 700 (domestic), ASTM A36 (international equivalent).
Purchase and Use "Avoidance Guide"
Quality Identification:
Appearance: no cracks, scars, folds (GB/T 709 plate shape standard);
Warranty: Check composition, mechanical properties and flaw detection report (UT flaw detection is required for important structural parts).
Anti-corrosion strategy:
Indoor: anti-rust paint (such as red lead paint) + topcoat;
Outdoor: hot-dip galvanizing (coating ≥85μm) or spray fluorocarbon coating.
Welding Note:
Welding rod selection: E43 series (such as J422);
Thin plate (≤6mm): no preheating is required, thick plate (>20mm): preheat 100-150℃ to prevent cracks.
