How to distinguish hot rolled steel from cold rolled steel?

Hot rolled steel and cold rolled steel are two common types of steel used for different purposes in different industries.
Both hot rolled carbon steel and cold rolled carbon steel are processed at different temperatures to give them unique properties. Hot rolled steel is produced at temperatures above the recrystallization point of the steel, usually around 1700°F, while cold rolled steel is processed at room temperature. These different processing methods give each type of steel unique properties and appearance.

The easiest way to differentiate between hot rolled steel and cold rolled steel is in the surface finish. Due to the formation of oxide scale during the cooling process, this oxide scale gives hot rolled steel its characteristic black or gray color and rough texture. There is no oxide scale on cold rolled steel, so it has a smoother surface finish and a clean, bright appearance.

Another differentiating factor between hot rolled low carbon steel and cold rolled low carbon steel is their dimensional tolerances and mechanical properties. Hot rolled steel tends to be less precise in size and less uniform in thickness and shape. Cold rolled steel is processed to tighter dimensional tolerances, so the thickness and shape are more consistent.

Additionally, the tensile and yield strengths of cold-rolled steel are generally higher than those of hot-rolled steel, making it suitable for applications that require a stronger, more precise material. In manufacturing, hot-rolled steel is often used for larger, thicker steel products such as rails, I-beams, and structural components, while cold-rolled steel is often used for smaller, more complex products such as automotive parts, appliances, and metal furniture.
